The choir was founded in 1974 by James Kirkwood, head of music at Thornbridge School in Sheffield as the Radio Sheffield Choir and is now a 50 strong mixed choir with a reputation for high quality and an extensive range and repertoire, conducted by Neil Taylor, who has a long association with Sheffield Cathedral.

The Radio Sheffield Choir quickly gained a reputation for popular programmes and the choir was featured on Radios 2, 3 and 4, including two very successful performances on the programme, ‘Glamorous Nights’ on Radio 2. In 1984, the choir changed its name to The Sheffield Chorale, increased its membership through audition, and took on board large choral works with orchestra.

The choir has raised many thousands of pounds for local and national charities through its performances, of which its main one, the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols at St. John’s Church, Ranmoor, has always remained a popular and well-attended event.

Threeway - Jazz Trio [Music Festival 2016]

Threeway - Jazz TrioThursday 22nd September at 7.30 pm

[This event forms part of our Music Festival for 2016]

Threeway combines two of the UK’s leading players with one of the North’s most experienced bandleader/composers, Ben Crosland.

Ben formed the trio in 2004 with Steve Waterman and Steve Lodder, two long term associates, in order to explore the subtle and open possibilities of a jazz group without drums. The result is playing with acute sensitivity to dynamics and therefore fit superbly well with “Listening” jazz venues, exploiting superbly the acoustics of Wentworth Church.

Threeway Trio performed in Wentworth in 2010, and we are delighted to welcome them back in 2016.

Note: A pre-concert talk will be given by the artists at 6.30 pm to explain their unique approach to their music.

Tickets cost £7 (or £6 for concessions) and are available from Wentworth Village shop, or by contacting Richard Taylor on 01709 527713.

At this year’s annual Wentworth Festival, a festival that the choir has been very privileged to be invited to and attend since its inception, the choir continues its full year of celebrations to mark this very special occasion. The members are very enthusiastic about making this year one to remember.

Thanks to Tony Jermy the musical director and Irene Hill the accompanist, the choir continues to renew and revitalise its repertoire, from Songs from the Shows to new pop chart songs, while ensuring that the “Thurnscoe Sound” remains as compelling as it ever did.
